Change of voyage

A destination changed after cover attached — notify the insurer promptly.

Clauses and wordings

Definition

Clause 10 of the Institute Cargo Clauses. Where the destination is changed by the insured after the cover has attached, it must be notified promptly to the insurers for rates and terms to be agreed; if a loss occurs before that agreement, cover may still be provided, but only if it would have been available at a reasonable commercial market rate on reasonable market terms. Clause 10.2 covers the opposite case: where the transit begins as contemplated but the ship goes to a different destination without the knowledge of the insured or their employees, the cover is nevertheless deemed to have attached.

Why it decides money

Prompt notice is the condition, and the clauses carry a closing note saying so expressly. A cargo rerouted at the buyer's request and not notified is the exposure; a cargo rerouted by the carrier without your knowledge is not.
